Rock Formation

Hi. Just sitting in my friends garden in the swiss Alps and noticed in the rock formation a layer that looks like it is seeping rust. Any idea what is going on there? I have photos but I dont think you can put them on here?

As Tilly2 suggests, iron oxide comes to mind:

More likely iron carbonate siderite(low content ironstone) ferric oxide would stain darker.
