Many black cabs CLAIM to have wheelchair ramps.

Yesterday I tried one, and it was almost impossible to use ramp too steep, too short.

Any suggestion as to a ‘genuine’ black cab firm using low level floors?

you are right, not only is it impossible for the person pushing, it's pretty scary for the person in the chair too!

Ah, so you reckon I’m on a wild goose chase. (Good to hear from you anyway Bednobs).

I tried looking for the Company my late stepfather used, no luck but found these which do not look too steep.
that first picture looks steep, the second one less so. Part of the consideration is i guess the camber of the road, and the availability of kerb which would make things easier
I think my (late) mother used to use a company called dial-a-ride, I think they were more like vans with ramps in
The illustrations (and text) here illustrate how important it is to try to ensure that the pick-up point for a black cab has a fairly high curb:

If I was in your position, I'd possibly forget altogether about black cabs and try a reputable private hire firm instead, such as Parker Car Service:

Chris. Nice bit of lateral thinking - their vans might have lower floors, too. Thanks.
