My fiance is not a good flyer, so we need either a short flight or somewhere we can drive to (don't mind 2-3 days drive either way). We would like to go somewhere hot (beginning of June), somewhere we can get spoilt a bit, and ideally somewhere we can hire our own villa. We don't have loads of cash to spend, so the budget is probably 1k per head max. Does anyone have any suggestions?

in that time frame, if you're starting from the southeast of England, you could make the south of France or northern Spain, maybe northern Italy, by car. Have a look at websites like this http://www.villaworld.co.uk/ or Google 'holiday villas' to find other operators and ideas - many will have a lot of examples on their pages to give you an idea of quality and price. Prices will be starting to go up in June, start of the summer season.
May I recommend the Italian lakes and Almafi coast? The drive from Calais can be done roughly in one day (morning to eve), and the scenery though the mountains is breathtaking.
The Amalfi coast has some incredible destinations: Positano, Sorrento, Ravello etc, not forgetting the unforgettable island of Capri (available by ferry from Naples or Sorrento). I would suggest a quick Google on some of the locations to give you a taste of there beauty, romantic honeymoon destination.

I would highly recommend the Liguarian Coast of Italy. Its called the coast of flowers in Italy and they are not wrong.I have had the pleasure of visiting Italy a few times but this area is unspoilt.

You can fly to Nice and pick up a hire car and drive through Monaco and then there you have it.It took us 36 non stop to drive but then we are quite far north in Scotland.I would go for the flight - not long!V romantic.

If going abroad is not a necessity - Edinburgh is a fantastic city. I enjoyed it more than some european cities. 'Culture vulture' things to do if you're up for that (city under the ground, castle etc), and for your budget you do a short flight on the low cost airlines, but book into a luxary hotel?

Or what about the eurostar to Paris - city of romance and all. Effiel Tower, Notre Dame, dinner cruise on the Seine?

nicky we are going to Edinburgh Feb 4 my sons 21st-he lives there. We have booked into a fab hotel overlooking the castle callled The Point. Its dead romantic and you are right Edinburgh is simply wonderful - although as one American tourist allegedly said - the only problem with Edinburgh is - why did they build the Castle so close to the railway station?

loveupgirl - might be worth looking at cos the weather will be pleasant at that time of year and its a fascinating city.I'm scottish and biased of course.
