Hi, I'm going to an Indian restaurant on Friday night for the first time and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on what to eat. I like spicy food (but not too spicy) and I think I would prefer a lamb dish. Any recommendations or dishes I should avoid?

Depends on the restaurant really! In my opinion they vary so much - I like a dryish medium so generally go for a Madras and have had some that are very mild and some that have blown my head off depending on the restaurant!

Avoid anything hot as its probably just spiced up to cater for the after pub crowd - someone once told me that a Phal was just an in joke within the curry house trade to purposefully set the mouths of lager louts on fire who came in and asked for the hottest thing youve got!

Generally the curries come out in individual platters so if youre going with good friends youll have the opportunity to have a bit of everything!
Just go for a medium anything yourself and enjoy - I love curry!! Mmmmmmm!
I think you would really enjoy a lamb biryani.

The lamb is cooked slowly with the rice and vegetables and should be flavoursome without being hot.

It is served with a seperate curry sauce, which you can ask to be mild.

It is a very filling meal so you won't need too many accompaniments.

Enjoy it!

they usually indicate on the menu which dishes are mild, spicy, and very spicy
lamb pasanda is nice, simmered in a creamy yoghurt sauce with cinnamon and almond; may be too mild for you, though, as it's spicy but not usually hot at all.

A lamb dhansak is my fave.....sweet, slightly sour and med hot cooked in a lovely creamy sauce with lentils.

As mentioned, it really is a matter of taste. I love sweet curries with lots of fruit, coconut and creasm in mine....i know other who hate it and prefer a drier biryani. Of the good choices around are sag aloo (spinach), dopiaza (onions) Pathia, Ceylon, Passanda or even the very mild Korma.

You'll love it and let us know what you have !

Lamb Gost is very good -- its lamb and spinach -- and goes very well with some masala mix veg

Try a tikka dish - flavoursome without being spicy. My ex worked with an Indian woman who would not eat in Indian restaurants in England because all the food was too hot!

Also you can order a side dish of yoghurt which will cool you down if your meal is too spicy!

I like Lamb tikka chasni with a garlic paratha (like a cross between nann and chapati) instead of rice.

Anything but Korma, tha could put you off for life, my favourite is a Bhuna, or if your not sure have Chicken Tikka (not masala as this is the sauce) and you can always try one of your friends sauces.
i would definately recommend tikka tandoori or my boyfriend does have a curry with cheese melted on top which is to die for and not too hot but unfortunately i cant remember the name! I'd recommend chickne rather than lamb, but thats my own personal opinion! Enjoy!
