Is it not about time Shirley Bassey was honoured by this Government. She was born in Leopard Bay, a tough working class area of Swansea and has fought her way to the top of her profession, appearing at La Scala Milan, the London Palladium and even Top Of The Pops. Come on Mr. Blair, stop talking nonsense and give this lady the Knighthood, she so richly deserves.
I don't agree with overpaid prima donnas being given honours for doing what that get paid to much for in the beginning and that goes for sports as well, what has she ever done that she hasn't been paid for?
Shirley Bassey or "Burley Shassey" as she's known by us Cardiffians was born in Tiger Bay but at the age of 2 her family moved to Splott in Cardiff. She attended the same schools as my older sister (thats when she went to school) was the cause of one teacher having to to take sick leave. I admit she's a good singer but such a prima dona. Cant stand her myself.
give her a knighthood, don't make me laugh!they already hand these things out willy nilly to every tom, dick and harry!why make ellen macarthur a dame?when she sailed round on her boat she done that for herself, the selfish cow!try giving them to people who deserve it!
whats shirley ever really done to deserve a damehood? singings a few songs yeah rite that warrants it don't it? try people who actually work hard and do things for others and not people who do things for self gain!
loulou, let me ask you a question what do the VAST majority of people do for their knighthoods and Lordship status?
The honours system in this country is the biggest joke on planet earth, for example what did Sebastian Coe do to become a member of the house of Lords?
At least Shirley Bassey has entertained tens of millions of people over a fifty year period, whereas Coe got ONE gold medal at the olympic games in 1980 (I think)
Honours aren't handed out for excellence they are handed out for being an ar*e kisser to whichever political party.
don1,seb coe was a great athlete and he led the campaign that got us the 2012 olympics i think that warrants it more than some old bag who has sung a few songs!
anecdotally (if that is a word) when i was in labour with my eldest, Rhys, August 20th 1981, burley chasseys.mum was in st david's Hospital Cardiff just up from maternity and all the staff were buzzin cos she was in the building and i am screaming away shouting for jesus effin christ to take the effin pain away!!!!!!!see, what Morcame and Wise did for me?
