There are *NO* duty free allowances between countries in the EU. Duty free was abolished a few years ago.

There is free trade between member states - or at least that was the intention. It was also intended that member states would 'harmonise' their taxation. However, that hasn't happened and member states are charging different rates. Thus France charges a fraction of what the UK does on alcohol. So its cheaper to buy it in France. Its not tax free, French tax has been charged. And in theory you can bring back as much tax paid goods from another EU member into the UK as you want for your personal use.

But frightened by the loss of UK revenue, the customs apply a limit. If you exceed that you have to convince the customs that it is for YOUR personal use. Not your friend, not a mate in the office....

Duty free shops in EU airports will not let you buy if your destination is another EU member. Some won't let you buy at all, some have two prices, tax free and normal and you payt he normal, and dear old BAA airports allow you to buy at the same price, ie minus 17.5% VAT
