Straight down the A50 towards Stoke-on -Trent, turn right at JCB factory and follow signs to Alton.

Hire a car! otherwise, get yourself into Derby by Bus, http://www.kinchbus.co.uk/kinch/airline.html

then:
http://www.midlandmainline.com/mainpage.aspx?i d=332 would be the best way, if you could persuade them to do you a package from Nottingham or Derby.
Alternatively, get a train/bus connection with Central via Uttoxeter, http://www.centraltrains.co.uk/_popups/days_ou t/alton_towers.htm
