can anyone help me pls, im thinking of starting my family tree. not really sure where to start. i know that my grandads family were deported to austraila from ireland back in 1800s (i think)
can you anyone tell me why people were deported,
iv been told mixed stories, but would really like to know the full truth about ansestors

You firast start by writing down what and who you know about your family as far back as you can remember, then ask your parents and older relatives to add their information, ask your eldest living relative if they have any certificates or papers (e.g. copy wills) from the earlier generations. Once you have reached back to around 1901 you can start using the online census indexes to locate whole families and with the Civil registration index on line you will eventually get back to the irish ancestors that were supposedly deported.
What i would say is that it is possible the family had assisted parish to Australia by their parish council, this was common during the very severe poverty years which occurred twice in the 1800s, when the landowners refused the poor the access to produce in prefernece to selling the crops and then the 'famine' worsened dur to potatoe blight ruining the local crops.

The 1846-1848 potato famine spawned the first mass wave of Irish emigration to the United States. There was also massive emigration to England, Scotland, Canada, and assisted passages to Australia. Prior to that prisoners were being deported to Australia.

correct Octavius and i think the fact that this is supposed to be a family means it would be assisted passage which is traceable through the parish chest records if they are available

It would help you rubes05 if you could find out where your family were in Ireland, e.g. County, Town and Village etc. When you have done that you will be able to locate the local church.

Completely by chance I found that someone had written a genealogical research book that covers the area my father grew up in Ireland and a copy of it is located at the British Library. I haven't been to see it yet but hope to in the next few weeks.
