The cheapest single rail fare listed from London to Carlisle is the 'Value Advance C' ticket, at 16.50. (The next cheapest is the Value Advance Single B, at 25). I've just tried a few random dates and times. There were plenty of these cheap fares available from Carlisle to London but very few outbound from London.
So, theoretically at least, you can do the return journey by rail for 33. To check out the fares available when you want to travel, go here:
http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/
Enter your travel times, click 'Plan journey', then 'Get fare options' and 'Show single fares'.
If there aren't any cheap single fares available, a Saver Return (which allows travel on any trains outside of peak periods) costs 83.10.
I've also tried some random dates and times with National Express. I was offered 38.50 (Economy Return) from London to Carlisle and 28.50 (Economy Apex Return) from Carlisle to London. So your return fare would probably be within 10 either side of 67.
Megabus don't serve Carlisle but, if you can't find cheap fares elsewhere (and you don't mind a slightly awkward journey) they might still be able to assist you. This is because, for the dates I checked, they had plenty of seats available between London and Manchester for 3.50 in either direction. I was also able to find rail fares (at times which would connect up reasonably well with the Megabus services), between Manchester and Carlisle for 9.50 in either direction. If you can find similar fares when you want to travel, you could travel for 13 in each direction.
