???? I didn't know they had zones. ICBW though.

A standard single rail ticket from Liverpool Central to Chester is 4.30
Chester is outside the MerseyTravel area, so the zonal system doesn't apply.

As Dzug states, the single fare is 4.30. A return fare is normally 5.75 but a Cheap Day Return will cost you only 5p more than a single ticket. (i.e. 4.35).

In Chester, just show your rail ticket on the bus to or from the city centre, and you'll get free travel.

nice one ty for your help
so what is the difference between a return and a cheap day return apart from the price?
Cheap day returns usually have restrictions on them, eg for travel on journeys starting after 9.30am and not between 4pm and 6pm.
(With apologies to Bigbus)

For Baby02 (additional to Spudqueen's post):

Outside of the London commuter area, Cheap Day Returns generally only have the morning restriction and not the 'evening peak' one.

Additionally, of course, a Cheap Day Return is only valid for one day. With an Open Return ticket, you can return within 3 calendar months.
