sorrento to rome

I'm on holiday in July in Sorrento and I'm interested in going on a day trip to Rome. Does anyone know if this is feasible and how I'd go about doing it other then an expensive packaged tour?

from sorrento take a "circumvesuviana" train into naples, trains every 30mn and takes 55mn. from naples, frequent trains take you to rome in 1hr40-2hr10. the faster the train, the more expensive the fare; a standard single on an inter-city train is around eur22.00. check the italian railway website at http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

For a day trip I would think it is too far - it is at least 3hrs each way assuming you get good connection times. It is also around 3hrs e/way to drive.
