If you were at a wedding and was offered a choice of wedding fruit cake or wedding sponge cake, which would you choose (if any!)?

Royal (break your teeth) icing - fairly unpleasant when on a fruit cake, having been next to marzipan.
Fruit cake - beloved of old ladies and serious traditionalists, but fairly disliked by most right-thinking people. It's too heavy after a meal
Ditch the fruit/sponge option and opt for all chocolate - everyone likes that! We did. Everyone remembers it, everyone says 'Oh, that chocolate cake at your wedding..........Yum....'

If you did individually iced cakes and did them kind of like this one from the Martha Stewart website - you could have some of both.

True indeed Madam Chattenooga (and others who've suggested this). We plan to have a mixed-tier cake, but as fruitcake is richer and denser (is that a real word?) you get more slices per cake compared to an equivalent sized sponge (I can't believe I'm saying this, I usually talk about football and beer!!!). Anyway, without actually knowing what each guest's preference would be, I thought I'd see what a cross section of Answer Banker's thoughts would be on the thorny spongecake/fruitcake dilemma! I thank you one and all!!
