The bus costs 17.50. (That's about US$35 or 25). A taxi would be very expensive. The Heathrow airport website reckons on around 50 for a cab into central London. Taking that as a guide, a taxi to Gatwick might cost around 80 (US$160 or 115).
For the rail journey with the fewest changes, don't take the Heathrow Express into central London. Take the London Underground train instead. That takes you directly to Victoria station, from where you can catch either the Gatwick Express or the Southern Trains service to Gatwick Airport. The Underground fare is 4 (US$8, 6). Southern Trains charge 8.90 (US$18, 13) to Gatwick airport. Gatwick Express is much dearer (and only slightly quicker) at 14.90 (US$30, 21). The total journey time is typically just under 2 hours.

Oops!
Slight correction to my post. (I've mis-read the National Rail website. I ought to know that the Underground from Heathrow doesn't go directly to Victoria!). By rail, either take the Underground to South Kensington and then change for another Underground train to Victoria (fares as above) OR take the Heathrow Express to Paddington, then the Circle Line (Underground) to Victoria. The through fare from Heathrow to Gatwick is 27.40 (US$55, 40) if you use the Southern Trains service or 33.40 (US$67, 48) if you take the Gatwick Express.
