I'd buy yourself a guide book, even if it's just a general one. I have bought A Brits Guide to New York and A Brits Guide to Walt Disney World and Florida which are full of tips for us Brits. For example they tell you the different words that the yanks (and I use the term loosly!) use eg sidewalk/pavement, eggplant/augbergine/, heavy cream/double cream. They are also useful on where to find toilets (and for goodness sake, don't call them that - you ask for the restroom if in a public building like a bar or restaurant or bathroom if in someones house). Anyway, look for a guide book which does detail some of the differences between the US and Britain. Of course one of the best things about travelling in the US is that they speak a form of English, so you can understand roadsigns (in general! - yield = give way!) and there are few language difficulties!
