Does anyone know if train travel is quieter or busier during the summer school holiday?

A bit of both.

Peak hours are probably quieter, off-peak a bit busier.

I ran a railway station for several years and I'll add my support to Dzug's answer.

Monday to Friday rush hours are a bit quieter. (e.g. 600 seat trains which would normally run with 100 people standing might run with nobody standing and a few spare seats). Friday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays can be much busier. (e.g. Saturday morning trains might normally only have 150 people travelling into London. During the summer holidays, this might rise to 400).

During the school summer holidays, try to avoid travelling on Friday evenings. This is usually the busiest period because families going away for the weekend are sharing trains with commuters.

Remember, as well, that Network Rail often schedule major engineering works for school holiday periods. Always check times before travelling (especially, but not only, at weekends)

It would depend on the route as well, where I live, they are much quieter during the holidays
