potters liesure resort, hopton on sea
i have just booked potters cyprus xmas holiday, is anyone out there going too, or has anyone been before? would like to hear your opinions

Good evening everyone! I feel I need to offer a brief �caveat� about �Trip Advisor� and a couple of other similar sites that promote presumably unsolicited comments from travellers. The concept of Trip Advisor is wonderful and from its inception it was designed to allow travellers to share their gained experiences. Quite an altruistic endeavour.
Unfortunately, there�s an element of contributors who have nothing to do with honest, unbiased experiential information. Instead, the posts are efforts of misguided and possibly dishonest property owners who feel that by painting a rosy image of their venue, it will bring more custom. There has even been documented cases where property owners have ..how should I say this�have offered incentives to individuals to post positive commentary about their venue. It has also been noted that there are times when these glowing epistles, (some written with such acumen that they allude to some minor flaw, but quickly add that it�s begin corrected), have been posted just before the property was due for inspection.

Village Vicar - I, and I'm sure I'm not alone in this, have been using Tripadvisor for a number of years and have found it very helpful - as have other I know. Planted comments of the type you describe are often very obvious and noticeable and I would never take notice of any recommendtion where there are only a couple of reviews or a "brochure like" description. You also have to read between the lines as it is common to find that some people think a hotel is good value and others disagree - it depends on what you are expecting for your money. We not entirely the fools you suppose us to be.
Having said all of this, I am very well travelled and have found it a useful site for finding out about hotels that are included in a package I have been looking at. I have also posted reviews myself on my return from holiday.
As you have said that you are in the travel business yourself then your comments & recommendations could also be slanted - it could, for instance, be to your advantage when you regularly recommend certain restaurants as you do. And your opinion of places is a personal opinion - just as mine is - and may not suit the person you are recommending something too. It depends if they like the same things you do. I am not however in the travel business - just someone who enjoys travelling and does not have excessive amounts of money to spend.
I believe that some sites, like tripadvisor are very useful for getting a variety of opinions. Your opinion is just one and others are necessary to get a rounded picture. I usually also look at sites like Lonely Planet & other general descriptions of places & hotels.

You seem to be suggesting that we should only take notice of anything you have to say. I personally do not always find your postings really useful - they often ramble on and on and go on about personal incidents & childhood that don't always have any relevence or use in answer to the question asked. You do not always seem to read the question properly - as for example when someone only has 2 days in a city and wants advice of what to see and you frequently air your knowledge of long distance side trips to other countries or cities. Why if someone only has 2 days would they want to leave the city and go somewhere else - unless they do not want to be in that city?

Mybutty - Tripadvisor has got 15 reviews of the Hopton on Sea resort and the majority of them are very positive so I imagine that if you really enjoy Potters UK holidays you will also enjoy their holiday to Cyprus. People in particular mention the friendliness of the resort staff and I'm sure they will strive hard to make sure that carries through to Cyprus also. I imagine that a lot of the people who go on the Potters holiday to Cyprus will be people who have been to their UK resort so you will all be like minded people with a bit of luck! Enjoy yourself.

AB clearly reaches people of great diversity in experience and backgrounds. Persons, clearly such as yourself, who have vast knowledge, provide valuable insight and information to assist others. It is particularly these contributions that make the site so endearing and valuable.
However, I�ve also found there are large numbers of people who have a sweet innocence about them, which is not only reflected in their questions, but in their follow-up contributions as well. It is that group of people whom I feel can often benefit most from the value of AB � in the diverse experiences shared by others.
I felt I went to great strides to acknowledge the qualities and benefits of Trip Advisor. I too have used it for years and in fact, participated in its conceptualisation documentation through the Flagship Group. Trip Advisor is indeed an asset to travellers seeking information. I feel badly that I did not convey this accolade sufficiently for you to have seen my intent. I can only strike this up to having written too quickly and not considered how I might communicate this to everyone�s more effectively. Over the past few weeks there has been numerous references made to Trip Advisor and one other review site for travel. Clearly, some of the travellers who had made queries were novitiates in travel. And it was with this thought, that I felt it important to share this fair caveat about these type sites. I believed, and I still believe that there�s a number of people who would never imagine that some of these sites may be �spiked� by the vendor. With restaurant guides, it happens so regularly now, that some media outlets refuse to publish emailed reviews.
Again, I need to apologise. In this instance, I�m at a loss as to what you�re referring to about when you wrote �Why if someone only has 2 days would they want to leave the city and go somewhere else - unless they do not want to be in that city? �
I �think� you�re referring to the person who asked about travel to shikoku? Perhaps I misunderstood. It�s certainly possible. But as I understand it, the individual is going to be in Japan, presumably one of the major cities, and wishes to visit shikoku. Again, if I�ve misunderstood what this person has asked about, I�m sure they will point out that I�m either mistaken or an idiot. Again, constructive criticism is always valuable.

There are occasions when I make reference to childhood and there are instances where what I�ve offered may possibly not have relevance. No V V I wasn't referring to Japan posting. That was, in my opinion, one of your better answers. There has been more than one example; e.g. when someone who had never been to Budapest before, and was only going to have 2 days there, asked for important things to do/see, your first suggestion was to take a cruise to Vienna!!

Well I live just down the road from said Potters Holiday Camp and it always has good reviews .In fact there are an elderly couple who live in my town which is about ten miles from Potters Camp at Hopton and they actually go there on holiday every year ! They travel ten miles because they love it so much
They were featured in the local paper because it was a quirky story !

Well, thank you for that JK. I shared the hydrofoil with Whickerman because people often allude to only having a couple of days, but either have more, and sometimes extend their trips. I also chatted on that thread about Whickerman coming to Romania. It appeals to many - however, it is a long trip from Budapest.
More times than I can blink I find that I've taken people on trips that were supposed to only last two or three days, but then suddenly morph into a week...and even longer!
But I take your point. And as I offered previously to you JK, I do apologise, unreservedly if I caused you to feel I had discounted anything you had contributed.

I actually always check TripAdvisor before booking any hotel and I think I can judge the 'spoof' reports for myself - for example our local hotel has no reports then suddenly 4 posted in a day all declaring it to be wonderful - dodgy I think. I also contribute to TA on every hotel I have stayed in, and I value it and sites like it for providing honest opinions.
There are 100 reviews for the Athena Beach Hotel in Paphos on Tripadvisor. This is the hotel that Potters use in Cyprus according to Potters website. You will find a mixture of reviews but in general they seem to be good. Also you will have the added advantage of some Potters own staff looking after you..
