Who knows? Depending on what passport you hold you might need one anyway.

And as the visa application form asks about criminal convictions you might get turned down for one if you do apply.
why not, we let every criminal known to man enter this little island of ours.
exactly what henious crime did you commit ? you can tell us, after all you will never[hopefully] meet us.
As usual, Dzug provides the only sensible answer.

You've omitted to mention which country you're in (or, more importantly, which passport you hold). If you're in the USA, you don't require a visa to enter the UK. See here:

US citizens don't require a visa to enter the Schengen countries which are Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Greece, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden. Other countries may require a visa. You should check the website of the relevant embassy. (Even when a visa is required, most countries don't ask about criminal convictions for a tourist visa but a few might).

hey mate yeah im from australia and hold an australian passport (forgot to mention that) was told that they cant get hold of records from other countries unless it is major??? but would it be on the chip in the passport????
Not would NOT be in the chip in the passport despite what loads of paranoid loonies seem to think. All the information on that chip, or in the machine readable bar coding, is printed in clear on the passport as well.

As an Australian you do not need a visa to visit the UK (or Europe) as a tourist for up to 6 months (3 for Europe, generally). You will not be asked about a criminal record - most likely questioning will confined to how long you will be staying, do you have enough cash to support yourself and do you have a ticket home and if not how will you pay for one.

Surprising what a load of racist abuse you generated from a couple of (I hope drunken) idiots.
