For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.As with all big cities, there will be some 'dodgy' areas, so make yourself aware of where they are before you go. otherwise, the standard rules apply - don't flash your money around in public, don't carry cash, use traveller's cheques (note the numbers and keep them in your hotel, separate from the cheques) and keep your eyes and ears open. Have a good time.
As Andy says, treat it like any city. Basically, at night if there are people on the street you'll be OK, and 99.9% OK if there aren't :)
The red-light areas are very safe as its in everyones interests there that tourists - and there are a lot - are safe.
I wouldn't bother - and never do - with travellers cheques. I go there a lot and treat it like London.
