What is the reason for the Barcode signs at the side of the road, particulary at junctions?

Do you mean the little signs with 1,2 or 3 diagonal lines? If so, they're simply counting down the distance to the junction.
Do you mean the black and white sideways-pointing arrows? If so, theyr'e to make motorists see the roundabout or junction or bend especially in fog or bad light.

No, they are definately barcodes but they are turned sideways, ie the bars run horizontal instead of vertical. They are on signs about 18 inches by 48 inches.....
