Ryanair online check-in
With Ryanair's online check-in service you are asked to provide your passport expiry date. However, one of the people i'm travelling with has an 'old-style' passport which has Aug 2009 as expiry date, rather than the DD-MM-YYYY format that Ryanair asks for.
How do I enter the expiry date of an old-style passport?

The latter is exactly 10 years, to the day, after the former. (For example, I've just dug out an old passport which was issued on 10/11/78 and expired on 10/11/88. I've also checked that the dates in my current passport follow the same pattern).
It seems that the passport office left the 'day' bit of their 'librarian's' rubber stamp set to a blank space when they stamped your friend's passport with the expiry date. However, the oval stamp below it should show the issue date; just add 10 years onto that.

I've just been thinking again about your friend's 'old style' passport. Burgundy passports were introduced as long ago as 1988. Digital images, etc were introduced in 1998. As far as I can see, nothing has changed since then except for the introduction of biometric information in 2006, so I'm mystified as to how anyone can have an 'old style' passport (unless that simply means non-biometric) issued in 1999.
However, I still advise looking for an issue date and adding 10 years to it.

It really is weird; everyone i've spoken to says that there should be a exact expiry date but my friend is convinced. We will have to look for the issue date and work it out from there, as I won't be seeing the passport until we fly out of Manchester airport tomorrow morning, and it will be too late to do anything then!!

My 'old' but still in date passport runs out in April 2008 and it does have an expiry date in it DD/MM/YY
Tell her to look under her photo - can you not see it before you put the date in? If she can't travel she will be very disappointed. My old passport actually has the expiry date written in it twice, both times in the DD/MM/YY format
