My reason for going was, probably fairly obviously, the scuba diving - personally, I wouldn't have gone if I wasn't a diver.
However, on both islands I went to there was evening entertainment, albeit very basic in nature (bingo, hermit crab races, quizzes etc...), and there was ping pong and on Ari Beach a tennis court. On Thudufushi we played cricket and football against the waiters.
The snorkelling is good, but is well worth taking a diving open water course. It will take about 4/5 days, involves a number of dives after the initial training, a bit of theory and a final multiple choice test, which is an absolute doddle.
I went to Kuredu Island it is one of the biggest Islands but still takes less than an hour to walk round and it is the only Island to have a golf course and driving range. In addition to the activities already mentioned the atmosphere in the bars is great and everyone is very friendly it gives it the village pub feel as there are so few people on the island that you have to get on.Type in Maldives on google and trawl through the sites until you get to a personal site from someone who has been there or a guest book of a resort to get some more comment you won't find many negative ones
