I returned a couple of weeks ago from a trip to Hong Kong. I took Hong Kong dollars cash, but used a credit card to pay for some purchases and I did use a debit card once to withdraw cash from a cash point.
I only visited one beach, Stanley, which is on Hong Kong island. I'm not sure about watersports, but the swimming was only with the shark net. There was someone water ski-ing outside the shark net, but that may have been their own boat for all I know. There are plenty of other beaches, some on Hong Kong island and many on other islands. I suggest that you get yourself a good guide book and see what that says.

thanks spudqueen
i ask for bf actually, he will be there for 3 months, so dont think he can carry that much cash, so have to use card, im only going to get 200 HKD for him. if only use credit card spending without withdraw, there shouldnt be charge is that right?
do you enjoy your trip? few weeks ago, must be really hot there, i will go november time to meet my bf there. he is doing kiesurfing ,so just not sure he should take his own kite or not, it is quite big bag...
200 HKD? He'll need 100 to get the airport express into town! Most ATM cards work in HK, all major credit cards are accepted. There are ATM machines at the airport (most of them are near the main Airport Express counter)

If he is accessing a UK account, check what charges they will apply, if they do charge, try and find an account that doesn't, preferably with internet access so he can transfer money over to spend.

trobot, thanks

200HKD because i forfgot to preorder the currency for him! he leave on monday, so probably take some sterling cash to exchange on hongkong airport then.
Hi, yes, HK$200 isn't much money! It's less than 20! He should be able to pick some HK$ up at the airport, either here or there.

Hong Kong was great, I really loved it, though, yes, it was hot! I believe that July/August is not really the best time to go, but we went out to a wedding there, so no choice as to when we went! No idea about whether your boyfriend should take his own kite, I think it's something that should have been researched before now!
