This is a place that has fairly reliable warm (rarely hot) weather for most of the year and, although (perhaps because) not widely covered with cheap offers, it is very relaxing. You can go for trips across the island which is very scenic or simply go for walks as long or short as you want them, all in the countryside (along the irrigation system they call levadas). Hotels and such there are all equipped to provide food and alcohol and prices of these are quite moderate. The cuisine is not elaborate but very tasty and made from the freshest of materials. Accommodation is not the cheapest going but reasonable all the same. Tourists are generally aged well above thirty and raucous behaviour is more or less unknown. The local population is singularly friendly and well balanced. Offhand, I cannot think of a safer environment south of the UK, although north of it provides more than one choice.

I agree with the answers given - a cruise of you can afford is probably the best on your own - you won't be the only one and htere is plenty to do. The other answers mostly suggest islands, and I don;t know why but it's true , a lot of singles travel there and have a great time. I can say, in 2 holidays in the greek islands, I wasn't alone but on the occasional evening I was (yes we rowed) I wasn't short of company, and not being hit on, just company. Might be best top book thru one of the websitesw that specialise in single (without being on the pull!) holidays.
Good luck & enjoy!

A cruise - you can get you know your fellow travellers before you go on sites like http://boards.cruisecritic.com/index.php so you have ready made chums to share trips with etc. Suggest you go with a decent 4* line like RCI or Princess or NCL and not a converted car ferry like Thomson or Island Cruises or Ocean Village though!
