I never got stopped or asked for id BUT whether it's the same now I don't know. I wouldn't think you'd need a passport but photographic id might be needed now.
Why not check on the web site of the airline who is taking you, or maybe on the web site of the airport where you are flying from.
Some airlines and some countries accept a photographic driving license, or maybe an identity card if you are from say France.
But in this day of high security why run the risk that an airline or a country wont let you in because you have not got the right documentation.
Just bite the bullet and buy a passport.
Then you know you can get on any plane, or get in any country without a problem (I know some countries require a visa).

As far as the Jersey authorities are concerned, British citizens definitely do not need a passport. See the official tourism website here:

All airlines require ID before you can fly with them. They all accept an EU (photocard) driving licence (or, of course, a passport). Some airlines won't accept anything else but several will accept any form of photographic ID, such as a bus pass. Use this site to identify which airlines fly to Jersey from an airport convenient to you

and then consult the website of the relevant airline(s)for definitive information.
Ferry companies do not usually require ID, and this seems to be true of Condor Ferries, who operate to Jersey from Weymouth, Poole and Portsmouth:
