Flight socks

looking for some advice and sorry if this seems a bit silly!! I want to buy my dad some flight socks as is flying to the US and a lady at work is seriously ill with DVT so I am worried about him. My dad tends to wear shoe size 8.5. The scholl socks which I imagine are best are 6.5-9 or 9 - 12. I do use flight socks myself and of course they are tight as they are meant to be that I am tempted to go for the 9-12 but does that mean they wont be fitting him properly then wont be fully effective? I am worried for some reason the 6.5 - 9 will feel too neat for him. thanks

I got my flight socks from Matalon, just picked my shoe size they do them in black only.

They have to fit fairly closely to be effective, I would ask advice from somewhere like Boots: I had to wear them in hospital recently and they were quite tight (and murder to get on!) Have just read your answer - maybe ring a chemist and ask advice?
