It's about 10 mins walk from Time Square and there's a great diner called the Red Flame nearby where we went for a proper US breakfast every morning.

The service can be a bit brusque as it's a busy place (and New York) but the food is great and service is very fast.
Make sure you go up the Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Centre) at night.

Always use tripadvisor.com to read hotel reviews before you book anything. Times Square is noisy 24/7 and very busy. Personally I wouldn't want to stay right in it - if you do we have stayed on business at the Crown Plaza right in the square. We also stayed in a little place called the Metro on 34th right between Macys and EST - great views from the roof terrace and an easy 10min stroll to Times Sq.
I stayed in the Parmount Hotel literally a 30 second walk from Times Square and couldnt belive how quiet it was. The reviews on Trip Advisor are basically 99% negative but we loved it there......
Also stayed at the Portland Hotel again literally 30 seconds walk from Times Square and also VERY quiet - terrible hotel though, filthy and wouldnt recommend although Trip Advisor gave it quite good reviews....

I have stayed at the Hotel Pennsylvania, which is next to Macys and about 15 minutes walk from Times Square. It is cheap, but I wouldn't like to stay there again. I'd prefer to go back to another hotel I've stayed at - the Milford Plaza which is just one block from Times Square, and a much nicer hotel. Whilst at the Penn they advertise that you have to show your room card to enter the lifts in practice this did not happen, and anyone could wander round the hotel, as evidenced by all the takeaway leaflets we found pushed under our door all the time. At the Milford Plaza you do have to show your room card to get to the lifts, so it is much safe, also the rooms were nicer.

Just read Sashas post, and I stayed in the hotel next door to the holiday Inn. A little more basic than the Milford Plaza but still close to everything and clean. Can't remember the name off hand but iff you google the street name it will probably appear.
Also noticed you are going in Feb, I went in Feb 2 years ago and they had the worst blizzard in 50 years - 2 foot of snow in 2 days. Wrap up warm and take some sensible shoes just in case (I only had my trainers so had to buy snow boots there).
