Zacsmaster has answered your question perfectly but, if you're still unsure about using the Underground, I'll mention that the terminus for the Number 10 bus is immediately outside Kings Cross station (on York Way). If you hop on a bus there, you can get off at Selfridges (on Oxford Street) and simply walk down Norh Audley Street (which is the first turning on the left) to the US Embassy.

I think the bus would be best for you, if using the tube for the first time and alone it would be quite confusing.
Allow yourseld plenty of time and enjoy the bus ride, after all you cant miss Selfridges.
good luck with the Embassy [ take a book to read whilst waiting].
allow yourself a good deal more time for the bus than the tube, though. Get a seat upstairs and enjoy the view.
What a great service!
The great standby for questions like this is Transport for London's website.

www.tfl.gov.uk

Use the 'advanced search' option and enter the date and time you wish to travel. Then, in this instance , in the box for where you are travelling from, above 'station', enter "King's Cross" which will bring up a list of options (underground etc). Choose the rail station. In the 'to' box scroll down to 'place of interest' and enter " American Embassy Mayfair". Enter those and the site will list a number of options. It also provides a little plan of the area you are going to, which you can click on to.
Best of luck at the Embassy. When I was there back in December, I was told the wait would be around 4 hours, which I found hard to believe but it was ridiculously - closer to 5 hours in fact! Take a book or something to help you pass the time.
