I went to a beach near Tulum, with the most amazing beaches and wonderful sea life. It is on the Carribean coast approx 3/4 hour drive from Cancun. I would suggest avoid Cancun as it is a popular tourist trap and travel a little further south.
Plenty of hotels and cabanas in a romantics paradise.
Have a great time - wonderful country.

Playa del Carmen is brilliant- not too far from Cancun, but a million times nicer- great restaurants, beautiful beach, good bars and nightlife-plenty to do. Nice snorkelling round beach, plus trips out to see manatees. Although touristy, it is still great fun, and not spoilt- plus it is easy to get to some of the quieter places and the ruins.

go with what auro suggests, travel down the coast away from Cancun and P del C to get the lovely quiet spots with 'real' mexican people and food. You will need a more specialised tour company to DIY its really easy to travel in mexico and you will always fbe able to get a great place to stay on the coast.

We really enjoyed, and would recommend the Mexican West Coast. In particular we enjoyed Puerto Vallarta and Acapulco.

If you want true Mexico then it would have to be Puerto Vallarta. If you do go there l would also recommend the 'Canopy Tour' its really brilliant.
