do you have to pay when you change your name on a passport. i dont remember doing it when we got married but that was some years ago. my cousin listened to the automated fee message today and it didnt mention this category. it doesnt say on the form to include a cheque. i asked in the post office today for her and a woman said it was 77.50. surely this cant be right.

nooooo, thats lame! my cousin did say that she wouldnt be getting married again if its going to cost her! the cheek of it!
However, you do not have to change your name when you get married. Therefore you can travel on your pre-marriage name provided ALL your travel documents, (tickets, hotel bookings, visas etc) are in the same name as your passport.
when applying for your new passport you also need to send the original marriage certificate in, if that's why the name has changed, or the document for the name change i.e. deed poll.
New photographs also need to be sent in with them certified - section 10 on the application form, which the countersignatory also needs to sign, date & put the wording that applies - all on the back of one of the photos.

apparently there is no where on the form that says to send her marriage certificate in.

can you also please help by telling us where it states this price. thank you
it doesn't state the price on the form; perhaps 'cause the cost is variable. My phone bill is enormous this month since phoning their 09 number......swizz !
I seem to be trying to sort out your hair one moment and your passport the next!

You ask where you can find confirmation of the fee for changing your name on your passport. See here:

(That link also states the need to supply a marriage certificate. It's under 'Marriage and civil partnership name changes').

Bchico, can you sort my tv - it's busted :)
In the package that you get from the post office, there are guidance forms as well as the application form. It clearly tells you that a name change incurs the full standard fee and that supporting documents must be sent in, along with your current passport. If your new photos and old photos are clearly the same person you do not have to get them certified again. Equally you can choose to leave the passport in your maiden name if you don't want to pay £77.50 but just make sure you book your flights and get your visas in your maiden name too, and carry a copy of your marriage certificate with you in case any of your other documents, cards etc are in your married name.
