There appear to be no direct flights from the UK to Portland, Oregon. Therefore what is the most direct route to Oregon without being too expensive?

The most direct route will be via Seattle, but you might find it cheaper via just about any US gateway. If you use one of the cheap flight sites it will give you a selection - in price order if you so wish
The most direct route is London/Heathrow to Seattle which flies within a few hundred miles of the North Pole. Seattle is a mere 160 miles (260 km) from Portland, so either rent a car and drive from there—often cheaper than flying—or catch a commuter airline. An itinerary to Portland booked through Seattle usually uses Horizon/Alaska Airlines which runs 12+ commuter flights a day.
Get a BA flight from LHR to SEA. If Portland is near to Seattle, you won`t need to get another flight. Just drive. Count A Strong, Seattle is more than a few miles from the North Pole!
It says THE FLIGHT goes within a few hundred miles. Should have gone to specsavers!
Sorry Count. It doesn`t. Might go over Iceland on a good day (sometimes more north than others according to conditions and flight plans)
I got the info from a website. Regardless of whether it does or not, your answer merely repeated what I'd already posted.
It is a 3 to 3 1/2 hour drive from Sea tac airport in Seattle to Portland. So unless you like to drive, it is faster to fly on one of the commuter flights. The last time I flew to Europe, the cheepest was on KLM, but you have to check all of the airlines as they all have sales at different times of the year. Try Orbitz, Expedia, Cheep flights, all of them refer you to the others and you will get the best price available for when you want to travel. Be prepared to have a layover of up to 6 hours from you entry flight before you will be connected to your commuter flight. Most flights leave Europe at 10am to 2 pm each day and it is a 12 hour flight to Seattle or Minneapolis. then a 1-3 hour from there to Portland.
