I work in a Post Office and we have been informed that US dollars are no longer acceptable in Mexico, and we should only sell peso to customers travelling there.

we were all inclusive and didn't need any money except to pay for the excirsion to chichen itza, which we paid or with dollar travellers cheques and for going to the club in cancun, which we paid for with dollars in the hotel and then at the club i;'m sure we used dollars too. at chichen itza we used dollars i think for souvenires (which I can't spell tonight)
Mexico introduced new rules on 14 September (so people's experiences before then are irrelevant). From what I can make out there are restrictions in using USD rather than an outright ban

Hi geoffb, I don't think you will have too many problems using the USD in Mexico. The banks may be restricting their use but you will find many shopkeepers still prefer to have them. I would take a bit of each and get some out of the ATMs when needed. I have over the years worked in a few countries where the USD was not the currency but the shops and hotels prefered getting paid in them.
