30 Next year !!! Want advice on NYC trip

Another question lol... I am going to book to go to NYC soon for next year. i'm not 30 until december. Would Jan 2011 be too expensive? Anyone thats been to NYC I would LOVE to hear from you!!!! x

January will be fairly off-season in NY so it shouldn`t be too expensive. It will be post christmas shopping time so you might get a better deal in the hotels. It can be pretty cold there at that time of year though...

NYC is great! If you go in January, the sales are on and it is super for shopping. Be sure to take your passport in to Macy's and Bloomingdales (maybe the other big stores too) and register with them,,,they then give you an extra 5% off.

We went at the end of January and it was very very cold...but dry cold , so not so penetrating as here. Wrap up well when you're out and you'll be fine.
Loads of things to do, depends on what you like but don't miss going up the Empire State Building for a great view of the city.

I went there for my 28th (Jan 2005). We had a blizzard. Despite their being well organised, a lot of attractions were closed due to the harsh weather.

I was told to bin ALL reciepts if I buy items over there. To be honest the only thing thats worrying me if that I'm a make up artist and I want to go the MAC shop and get some palettes of eyeshadows as they dead cheap and you cant get them over here. Just don't want them taken off me on the way home. I am planning it to be a BIG trip and I intend to take ALOT of money with me too. Awww thank you peeps! Keep the suggestions coming as I am taking notes x

Why would you bin your receipts and why would you get MAC products taken off you?

I think its because your only allowed to bring back £140 of items from the US back into the UK, anything over gets taken off you or you get severly taxed on it. I'm not sure I'm just trying to find out whats what...

Don`t worry. You`re allowed to bring in £390 worth of goods. Don`t bother binning your receipts - customs know every trick in the book!

Yes, it`s a bit cheaper because of the exchange rate. Bloomingdales on Lexington Avenue has a good MAC range. If you have any kind of professional ID, there is an Estee Lauder staff shop (Estee lauder own MAC) and you could blag your way into that. Can`t remember the street. On Madisson or Park, about 56th st by the Apple shop.

Oh, another thing. If you have five empty MAC eyeshadow palettes, mascaras etc and you take them to MAC at Bloomies, they`ll give you a MAC product free

Funnily enough I am going for an interview with Estee Lauder next week as an associate so fingers crossed I may also be an employee! Yeh sounds good. Only problem is now who to take... All my friends are dating/married or have kids, I'm single. My sisters offered to come but she wants to bring her fiancee (not exactly ideal) lol... x

Yeh I will take someone with me. I want to go for at least a week maybe 10 days so I don't have to rush round like a loon to see all the sites, plus I need a few days to shop shop shop!

Good luck with the interview. If you get the job, give me a shout and I`ll look out the Estee Lauder staff shop address. It`s not easy to spot from the street when you`re walking by.
