Iraklio hasn't got much to recommend it. Maybe the Archaeological Museum. But for a view of Minoan Crete, the Palace of Knossos just outside town is magnificent - and you can indulge in history on the island. To the west, Hania is an attractive town and the Samaria (sp?) Gorge is impressive. The beaches are good but the trekking is better and the people are the best ;-)
