Holidaymakers Pine For Norway's Fjords

While many of us crave the sun when on holiday, there are an increasing number of people who travel for interest. A popular destination is Norway according to a recent article in a well known newspaper.

Norway is renowned for its breathtakingly beautiful scenery which consists mainly of high mountains and impossibly deep fjords. These fjords are formed when a glacier cuts a U-shaped valley by abrasion of the surrounding bedrock which is then subsequently flooded by melt water.

The country's fjords and lakes have been highlighted in a travel article for the Guardian.

A journalist recounted her experiences of splashing around in the country's water features. Those who enjoy swimming on their holidays could consider a trip to Norway. She commented that its landscapes were "aesthetically daring" and that taking a dip in the lakes felt like a "holiday from being human".
"Swimming in its steep fjords and sweeping valley lakes is an experience that's practically operatic," she wrote. It is also well worth visiting the many interesting towns and cities.

The most popular and well known are:

•    Bergen – has a strangely Mediterranean climate during the summer months. This is the second largest city in Norway and is on the West coast. It is estimated to be over 1000 years old. It has held the title of European City of Culture (2000) and also the Eurovision Song Contest was hosted there in 1986.

•    Trondheim - has an idiosyncratic charm. There are many historical sites including the Archbishop’s palace and Nidaros Cathedral.

•    Stryn – located on the innermost part of the Nordfjord. It is known for its all year glacier skiing.

Other fascinating sites include the fish markets where reindeer skins can be purchased.

The Norwegian tourist board recommend the country be toured by coach. This can be a great way to travel as you can gaze at the scenery without having to worry about watching the road. It is also a good way to make friends.
