Try using the add on 'Adblock', although don't tell Ed I suggested it.

I think it is the loading of the adverts that slows it down, so by blocking them it works quicker.

The clue in your question might be the word 'new'. Windows can take up to a month or so before it's downloaded every possible update.

However, on that thread, I've assumed that it's a problem with security software that's behind the problems. In your case, look out for the dreaded 'TrustedInstaller.exe'. If that's hogging a lot of resources, you can be sure that it's Windows updates that are causing the problem.

Alternatively try a different browser to see if it is any different.

I have had to stop using Firefox, as when I click on an embedded video on AB it hangs.

This doesn't happen with Chrome.
