As a teacher, we were saying this twenty years ago, and, in my opinion, it's the first possible reason, that education is not valued by many people in this country. I always recall working in Bradford and being told to be careful about remarks on the reports of Asian pupils as their parents would over-react against their children, especially their sons, if they were thought to be slacking.

I suspect the problem may lie in being poor rather than being white.

But we saw that the children of poor, non-white families were expected, from home, to work hard to try and get out of poverty
