Amazon Scam?

Have just received an email supposedly from Amazon telling me that 'as I may know', some accounts were compromised on October 26th and asking me to verify account details. email came from [email protected] . I haven't seen this before, but am assuming it is a scam?

I'm amazed that so many people haven't seen these scams before- I get lots even though I try to be careful about which email addresses I give to different organisations/people.
If it doesn't mention your name (if it's just Dear customer etc) delete it; if the address of the sender when you hover over it looks odd, delete it; if you don't have an account with the organsiation it claims to be from, delete it.
Even if it looks genuine don't click on any links- log into your Amazon etc account to check. Expect to get scam ones soon claiming to be from Talk Talk, RBS, M&S who have had data breaches

I had a very clever one a few years ago that purported to come from amazon.com and referred to a recently cancelled order. I had recently cancelled an order but I always deal with amazon.co.uk - floating over the link revealed a .ru (Russian) address.

I had a very very convincing one supposed to be from Apple the other day. The only thing that gave it away (and it had a very plausible email address ) was that it threatened to close my Apple account if I hadn't responded by sept 10th and I didn't get it till around oct 20th!

Any email asking you to "verify your account" is a scam.

Thanks all. Yes, I assumed it was a scam but thought I would just check as it was a new one to me. I try not to be naive, but it does make me cross that anyone should think they have the right to take money from other people who have probably worked hard for it, and then presumably laugh at them for being gullible.
