Arthritis Injection In Tummy

Today my mother who is 88 had an injection in her tummy for osteoarthritis
Why could she not just have swallowed it and what is it likely to have been

i honestly can't think of anything injectable in the tummy to help OA. Are you sure it was tummy, are you sure it's was for her OA, are you sure she has OA

I doubt that the injection was actually into her stomach. It's far more likely to have been an abdominal intramuscular injection (i.e. into the muscle tissue around her stomach, as that site is sometimes used when difficulties present themselves with the more common intramuscular sites, such as the buttocks).

Possibly a corticosteroid???

Oh, if it's actually osteoporosis, then it's far more likely to have been a subcutaneous (rather than intramuscular) injection of something like Denosumab:

Denosumab is into a vein though - it`s not intramuscular.

It's probably Denosumab which is an anti-resortive given for osteoporosis (60mg given subcutaneously every 6 months).

It's also given in the presence of bone metastatic disease at 120mg subcutaneously every 4 weeks.

If it's for osteoporosis it's currently only licenced for treatment in woman but for bone met it's given to men and women.

Denosumab is always delivered via subcutaneous route.

I might add that to be eligible for Denosumab then oral bisphosphonates would have to be contraindicated or she would have to be intolerant to them.
