I suspect my hard drive's had it (HP Pavillion) It says "repairing disk errors, this may take an hour or more". It's been saying that since 9 o clock this morning

It depends how big your disc is - it can be a very slow process.

Thanks. I have since googled hp forums and it seems to be a problem that doesn't resolve. I dropped the laptop and I think that's what did it. I'm currently searching for a local fixer
I also have an HP Pavillion which slid out of the car onto the floor, as a result of which the screen went funny.
I took mine to Computel and was very pleased with the service. It's a chain, so there may be a shop near you.

Thanks again. I have taken it to my fixer guy
Dropped it eh. May well have had a disk head crash wrecking the drive. I've found spinrite a decent disk salvager but nothing can work miracles. May need a new drive and OS reinstall. Trust all is backed up.
laptop drives are very cheap at the moment - have a browse over ebuyer.

Thanks OG. The computer guy said that the hard drive is probably ruined. He is OK but he does tend to do what he wants with a computer rather than what the customer wants which is why I was a bit wary of going back to him. He did say that a solid state drive is better than a disk and wanted to install that but it only has half the capacity so I stuck to my guns. The important stuff is backed up
