Agreed the past 12 years has taught me that.
'individual' - some with commonality tendencies......

In my limited experience, it was a case of 'if Tommy came across to us, he was as part of our family as the love we had for each other and my younger daughter had for his twin sister and vica versa' - and this worked the other way around when it came to his family hosting N or S, my two......
I am no expert but in the past have had to teach 2 autistic boys in main stream schooling before they were diagnosed, even though it was bleeding obvious to a layman like me. The only problem I had with the milder one was that the end of break I had to coach him out from under the school hut where he used to hide. The other was more of a problem; if you turned your back he would run out of school and release the neighbour's Rottweiler into the school yard.

Basically the word means self-centred. This can be seen from a number of egocentric posts from those who lay claim to this condition. This has to be one of the most difficult conditions to effectively monitor and those who do so must have the patience of a saint.

// FF...I'm not going to comment on that as it will be insulting to PP.//

blimey - didnt stop you above....

// I hate to say it but the term autism is, to me, as misunderstood as dementia.....// well Kanner described autism in the thirties and labelled it as Dementia Praecox - [ as ummm experts will confirm ] but things have moved on a long way since then

I am not sure if anyone would call it dementia nowadays
Autism has more than one cause. Sometimes it is genetic and sometimes it is not. Does anyone else in her family have autism? If not then her brothers could have been caused by an in uterine development issue, a birth issue, an invironmental issue, etc. If you love the woman and you are serious enough to be worrying about children then it shouldnt matter.
no autism in my family - yet the very last little girl born after 8 or 9 children is very autistic (same family)
wouldn't you just love it just the way it is. like down's I thought they were wonderful. Lovely kids.
I always say we are blessed our four were sent to us JJ. x
My cousin was born at home, at the insistence of her grandmother. The birth was very difficult and the baby, (she), didn't get enough oxygen to her brain. She used to be called 'backward' and 'retarded'. She's now diagnosed as autistic. She has a job in a college library, after passing typing exams, (which were difficult for her), but she's overcome appalling shyness in social situations and can hold a conversation now. She loves letter-writing and is always very punctual at sending birthday/Christmas cards. I can always spot her cards and letters, as her writing is very distinctive. She now has her own flat and travels by bus to see her Mum a few miles away.
She is a completely different woman from the 'invisible' little girl I knew. Her progress is astounding and I'm sure that her Mum is extremely proud of her achievements.
