Has anyone had the vaccine to protect against shingles ?

I have just been offered it by my G.P. Surgery as I am in the freebie age group for it, but it had never occurred to me and I am tending to think I will leave it alone.

I have just had treatment for cataract, (marvellous) and wonder if it might have some effect on my new lenses. Must ask my specialist.

I would be glad to hear of anyone else's experiences.

If you have the vaccine it will not give you 100% immunity against shingles but will reduce your chances greatly. The big deal about shingles in the aged is the severe nerve pain that is sometimes a residual of the disease. I have seen no adverse reports re. affecting cataract surgery. I would not have the vaccine as I am over 80 years of age in which group it is much less effective.

Your choice.
God Sqad - didn't think by your young postings that you were over 80 - you come across as a young 65 year old. Good for you.
JJ LOL..did I say 80?
Yea - you did indeed.

I would happily accept the vaccine when I reach the age it is offered, the pain of shingles is awful.

Like everything we have to choose for ourselves.
I wouldn't hesitate. The recurring pain of shingles is debilitating to many who have it.
A friend of mine was nearly blinded by shingles of the face. I think only the fact that she was married to a doctor saved her from being worse than she was. As it was, her face was badly scarred. Take the vaccine, avoid the risk.
Can you get shingles more than once?
Yes.
Oh darn!..... (Thanks Mamya)
I had chicken pox about 25 years ago and had a friend who called (she didn't know re chicken pox) some years after she told me that the day she called I looked like a monster that day . Chicken pox and shingles are the same family.
My husband & l are 76 & 77 but not yet in the category for the shingles jab in our area. We are desperate to have it. You are lucky to be offered it.
