I’m asking for a friend....she has been told under the nhs she cannot have a shingles vaccination until she is 80 which is a couple of years away. She has asked at her health centre if she can pay for one and apparently the answer is no. She has contacted private hospital and they do not offer this. Does anyone know where she can be vaccinated?

She has been misinformed.....she cannot have the vaccination AFTER 80 years old. She can have it NOW.
I wish there had been a vaccine around when I had shingles 30 years ago. At the time there was no treatment; you just had to grin and bear it. It really is the most debilitating of diseases which I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

She has been back 2 or 3 times and the answer is always the same sqad
Here's the 'official' answer, from the NHS website:
https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/who-can-have-the-shingles-vaccine/
Well, there are wrong.
70 or 78? Sounds odd! What about 71 - 77?
P,S Make sure that there is not a medical reason that they refuse to give the injection.
Less effective when you're 80 years old? Is it a bit like a sell by/use by date?
A bit like lots of things which cost the NHS, there has to be a cut off point.
ethandron....there IS a cut off point......it is 80 years old.
I know sqad, I read the info..
We have looked into this for clients. It is just 70 or 78.
Pixie...it is anytime between 70yrs and 80 years.
There's some kind of formula for working it out which actually makes sense when you read and digest it.
As an aside, sqad, what happened to muddy the waters twix me and thee?

No I’ve just spoke to her she said ‘what I meant was I will be nearly 80’. If you are 70 or 78 you can have it but not in between! Then if you are 80 you’ve lost your chance to have it. Seems very strange to me.
Ethandron.....not the time or the place to bring it up.
We were told not in between too. Is that wrong then? Xx
From my link, ImaBusyBee:
"anyone who was previously eligible but missed out on their shingles vaccination remains eligible until their 80th birthday"

So your friend IS eligible.
Ok. Would there ever be a time and place? I'm not sure what happened to sour things as I do have a great deal of respect for you even though I don't always agree.

"You can have the shingles vaccination at any time of year, as soon as you turn 70 or 78."

You can have it as soon as you pas 70.
Thank you sqad xx
