I didn't see the first series, but after reading how much it has been enjoyed here, I have been watching it for 45 minutes, and I have no idea what is going on.

Sounds like a general issue. I've increasingly had to use subtitles for some TV but found it ok with my laptop right near to me on catch up. My couple of years living in Yorkshire might have helped too :)

Sadly I think the sound issue is broader than Happy Valley, i often struggle with BBC programmes, and I'm not alone....
