Letting Agency requirements

I'm soon going to be looking a new place to rent and am likely to go through a letting agent. Its years since I last did this and would like to know what sort of requirements they are likely to have - ie. how many references will they require, will they want proof of income, will they do a credit check, that sort of thing. I've looked at lots of agents websites but none have this information on them and I can't make personal phone calls from work so I'd be really grateful if someone could help.

Thanks.

last time i rented, i needed 2 refereees, one of which needs to be your last landlord/mortgage company. They did a credit check on me. Dont think i had to prove income though
The Letting agent will usually contact an independant company to do the checks on their behalf. This will probably cost you between 100 and 200 pounds. They normally want Employers references and proof of income, or accounts if you are self employed. They will almost certainly do a credit check and may also want a second professional or personal reference.
