'The Magdalene Sisters', BBC2 11:50 pm. Whilst it is not based on a singke true story, it is said to accurately portray events which were commonplace in such institutions. For those who haven't seen it yet, it is a quite shocking film - the biggest shock, imho, coming in the end credits.

The lady who, as a child, was beaten so badly by the nuns that she bears the scars seventy years later....who was raped by the priest she begged for help....had the baby girl taken away from her.....
Mind you, if she did have a necklace stolen that must have been the straw that broke the camel's back, don't you think?
Do you know how wealthy these orders now are...on the backs of beaten children .......little ones forced into child labour?
Your answers, Tambo sound so familiar to me.....the voice of Catholicism.

I'm a Catholic by birth and luckily haven't had a bad experience. My mum isn't a Catholic so going to church was left to my dad. The day he decided we were old enough to chose for ourselves was the day we stopped attending church.
Still went to Catholic school but didn't have religion thrown at us.
Now....My mother is a born again Christian and had I been brought up attending her church I would probably still be believing...

'The states involvement in the Mag laundry' says it all. The nuns worked under state control running the laundry. The state would have had the financial interest. We saw dormatries that housed the girls not cells. I blame the irish men & families who didnt stand by these mothers and their children. Mary complains she worked 30+y for the laundry. In the film we saw a girl leave being claimed by her brother. No one claimed Mary so she remained or couldnt face the outside world. She worked for nothing - who paid to rear her child ? Thats what Mary worked for which she didnt understand imo. These were wayward girls & some probably required harsh discipline.
I saw girls in London 1960ish who had to give up babies for adoption for lack of state or family support. They mourn their loss due to their waywardness. As Ive said, we reared our family babe born in similar circumstances while my sis worked & we disregarded shame & gossips.
