Penstemon Pruning

Last year I cut my Penstemons down too late and ended up with leggy,woody plants with some flowering top growth, when is the right /best time to cut them back? I'm in the "soft south" so hopefully no more sharp frosts. Thanks.

I've read that the end of March is the best time. Frost shouldn't affect them.

I live in North Kent and did mine last weekend. Lots of new growth at the bottom.

I do mine usually in April and put some mulch on top, just for good measure.
