Stop using internet explorer (IE) for everything except for the few badly-designed sites that require IE to work.
Firefox can be very easily "extended" with extensions, to customise it to how you want. There are some brilliant ones out there, I'd strongly recommend you installing
Adblock Plus
Tab Mix Plus
Fasterfox
You can get them all by searching for them at:

i dont rate FireFox. It's slow and the general feel is wrong. I wouldn't bother.
Instead, stick with Internet Explorer and download AdAware (www.lavasoftusa.com) and Windows Defender (also free and very good http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx)
Once you install and update both applications, run a full sweep of your system and allow the Adaware/Defender to get rid of what risks they find.
tritan: IE is inherently insecure. so many problems have been found with IE. plus it doesn't support proper web standards.
firefox does take a while to load up, compared with IE. this is because IE is built into the windows shell, so microsoft are kind of cheating here. but once it's loaded, I find that it renders pages faster than IE does, and together with fasterfox, it also loads pages faster too.
