Should a button with two thread holes be sewn on with the holes vertical or horizontal, please? (This is a serious question!)

Traditionally vertical.
Horizontal unless you are sewing the button on to a narrow placket, when it should be sewn vertically

Thanks. I'm not sewing it though, I'm drawing it. Vertically seems to be 'right'.
If the buttonhole is horizontal sew horizontally. If the buttonhole is vertical, sew vertically.
Khandro, if what you're drawing is not too serious, draw it attached at 45 degree angle, and see if you get any comments and what they are.
I go with atalanta and I've done a lot of dressmaking. e.g. buttons up the front of a shirt are sewn vertically, those on cuffs, horizontally.

jourdain; I have followed your directive (it is on a shirt in a portrait). Down the front, vertical, and on the cuff and breast pocket, horizontal.
