// /// Are you saying three quarters of all foreign doctors in the UK are struck off, AOG? ///

umm there are around 200 000 registered and licensed doctors in the UK and we have heard already that around 100 doctors are struck off a year (out of around 5000 complaints - the doctors themselves pay for this hugely wasteful process - the GMC begged parliament 2000 [ how many knighthoods were awarded for that one ? ) to forbid them from failing to investigate possy complaints like the dotor did not stand when I came into the room ). You also dont have to exhaust local remedies before letting off to the GMC with whatever psses you off about your GP

of which if 72% are foreign medical graduates - then 72 are foreign that are struck off. (per year )

and so as a percent of the register as you can see it is something like 0.05 -0.1% ( per year ) [ so it is an incidence and not a prevalence ] sorry sorry technical detail on a technical subject

Is there racial bias in the complaint cases taken further by the GMC ?
well that idea has been around since the nineties....

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/gmc-clears-doctors-who-alleged-race-bias-1456286.html

and what happened to the two doctors who were cleared?

one ( SE) served as a councillor on the ..... GMC (!)
and one (AI) was a private tutor to the Dame Janet inquiry into Shipman
( she didnt knonw alot about general practice when she began and thx to anil ismaiil knew an awful lot when she finished )

I know I am batting at a much higher level than the usual AB
"black docs are bad - yeah innit ? " but you know someone did start this

this hugely wasteful paper run around costs the tax payer nothing by the way - it is all paid for by the doctors - 200 000 pops at £500 a pop - which gives a yearly income of £10m innit ?

@Peter

When you say "£10m income" and (paraphrasing) "doctors, as individuals, must pay" (for GMC investigations), are you saying this is the GMC making an income, or is it some governmental oversight body? Or the legal profession, maybe?

/// Okay you meant 72%. But the report doesn't say that at all. ///

Are you reading the same report as I?

If you are then may I suggest a little trip to Spec-Savers, because below is an exact copy and paste of the reports headline.

*** 72% of struck off doctors are from overseas: Cases include an Indian GP who ran an immigration scam and a Malaysian medic who secretly filmed female patients ***

*** Nearly three-quarters of doctors struck off the medical register are foreign ***

Simply arranging the words in a different order changes the meaning

e.g. "72% of foreign doctors are struck off", implying 72% of ALL foreign doctors end up being struck off.

Which is the proverbial different kettle of fish.

People react to the apparent meanings you convey, not to the precise wordings or the word order you choose and then take them to task for inattention to.

Annnnd, as usual, it's not AOG who is racist, he is merely drawing everyone's attention to a statistic.

Maybe it is the complainant patients, or the GMC's choices of which cases to push through which are unforgiving of ethnic minority practitioners?

I'm afraid it's you not me that needs to go to Specavers, AOG.

Around 72% of doctors who were struck off here over a 5 year period were trained overseas. That is what the article says. That is nothing like the same thing as saying that 72% of overseas doctors who come here get struck off. It's you that stated that 'statistic, AOG, when you said "...foreigners, even if they are criminals, and nearly three-quarters of them have been struck off the medical register"

It's like starting with the statistic that 90% of all murderers are male and then claiming 90% of males are murderers
