Ipad Charging Cable.

My ipad charging cable is pulling away from the connection because I sometimes stretch it, trying to use the ioad while its charging.

So I thought I'd by a longer one this time; but I read this as a reason not to buy a 2 or 3 meter cable

....We recommend 1M Cables for iPads due to the Amp required....

What does that mean?

A longer cable means that there will be greater electrical resistance, meaning that more power is lost in heating the cable.

The statement you refer to seems to be implying that using a long cable won't leave enough power to charge the iPad (and/or that the cable will get excessively hot). Unless that supplier is using exceptionally poor quality (very thin) cables, that seems ridiculously over-cautious because Apple (who make iPads and ought to know a thing or two about them!) will happily sell you 2m and 3m charging cables [if you're prepared to pay their extortionate prices!]

I'm looking at an mfi certified cable but not genuine Apple. should be OK?

OK, I admit it. I thought that 'MFI certification' meant that it was poor-quality flat-pack furniture ;-)

I'd genuinely never heard of it but reading through this lot suggests that it might be important:

Once you've got it though, I would expect any cable to work.

I charge my tablet (not an iPad but has the same amp requirement) on a cheap 3m cable I bought from Amazon and it's worked perfectly well for around 3 years.
Various family members use it charge their iPads from time to time.

Thanks hc reassuring. I have ordered one and see how I get on. If for any reason its slow it won't matter too much as I tend to leave it over night anyway.

I use mine overnight so I can use the tablet in bed whilst it's charging :)

Damn ..... I tried hard to buy well but the cable arrived today and there is no life in it whatsoever! It didn't cost much so I'm not bothered about a refund, more interested in knowing how to buy a 2-3m cable for my ipad successfully? Prefer not to spend £28 for one!

Any thoughts where I went wrong?

You are using the 'chubby' iPad charger and not the 3 pin plug with a USB slot from an iPhone aren't you?

I'm using a lightning cable just like the one in your link Fitzer. Plugged into the same socket usb adapter with surge protection that I have always used.

I rebooted again and it recharged happily. However once I disconnect the new cable and reconnect it again, it fails to work. I won't want to be rebooting it everytime I want to charge the ipad for a bit. Any more ideas?

Avoid these Eddie. As I have discovered they don't work and if I'd checked the negative feedback I'd have realised that before I bought one.

As I say I'm not bothered about losing the thrupence I paid for it, but just not sure how to tell good from bad to buy another one?

Well thanks again Fitzer and Eddie. I'll keep searching and see if I can find one that has no bad reviews at all. No scary tales of being a fire threat, or like mine, only a percentage of the cables working. Its a minefield.

I did see one cable that had a 'lifetime' free replacement guarantee but it was about £40! can't find it again now.
